My Letter to the American Cancer Society
I am disappointed. My step-father died of cancer - squamous cell carcinoma, to be exact. My recent reading of the news has informed me that nearly a half a million dollars was turned down by your organization simply because the organization donating was of atheist origin. My understanding has always been that disease knows no religion. Disease doesn’t care if you are “god fearing”, pagan, wicca, or other.
Please tell me your organization really had other reasons behind a declination of funds that can go toward studies and funding to cure a horrific and death-dealing disease. Please tell me hundreds of thousands of woman who face breast cancer on a daily basis aren’t going to be deprived simply because your organization has a religious problem with the receipt of funds. Please tell me you don’t readily accept funds from other organizations with overtly religious ties. Please restore my faith in a foundation that should be all about curing a disease with every bit of funding it receives. Please tell me the death of my step-father wasn’t in vain.
Thank you.
